Chippewa Nature Center to host Earth Day celebration April 20

Chippewa Nature Center (CNC), located at 400 S Badour Rd in Midland, will celebrate Earth Day with stewardship and conservation programs! Join CNC staff to learn about wild bogs and invasive plants, birdhouse building, and a vernal pool community science project.

The Wild Bogs of Ireland: A Story of Conservation (registration required if attending virtually)
10-11 am • FREE • Ages 9+, under 18 w/adult
Join us as the Irish Peatland Conservation Council teaches us about Ireland’s Peatlands. Bogs are a diverse resource that take thousands of years to form and grow. We’ll dive into how humans and wildlife utilize the bog, how it formed, and the conservation efforts that go into ensuring it’s around for generations to come.

Bluebird Nest Box Workshop
11 am-12:30 pm • $30/ $24 CNC Member (registration required) • Ages 9+, under 18 w/adult
Join a Naturalist to create a bluebird nest box. We will discuss Eastern Bluebird conservation, where to install your box, maintenance, and how to identify who is using the nest box. All materials will be provided.

Invasive Species of Michigan
1-2:30 pm • FREE
The Central Michigan Cooperative Invasive Species Management Area will be discussing invasive species and the impact they have on the environment. Learn identification tips for some of the more prevalent invasive species in this region, as well as some methods of how to help mitigate their spread or eliminate them from your property. This lecture will be held in the Visitor Center with an optional 30 minute hike afterwards.

Community Science – Vernal Pool Patrol
3-5 pm • FREE
Join us as we contribute to a statewide citizen science project hosted by Michigan State University’s Michigan Natural Features Inventory program. We will be surveying one of CNC’s temporary ponds to see what is living in and around it. This project helps gather data for protection efforts of these vital ecosystems. Waterproof shoes are recommended. Meet in front of the Visitor Center.
