SVSU Promotes Huntley to Provost |

Saginaw Valley State University has selected Deborah Huntley to serve as provost and vice president for academic affairs. Her appointment was announced by SVSU President Donald Bachand, who recently left the provost’s position to become president.
“I have known Deb since she left a successful career as a research scientist to come to SVSU, and she has consistently impressed me as a teacher, a scholar and an administrator,” Bachand said. “Among her extensive record of accomplishment, she was one of the chief architects of our assessment and resource distribution model that drew praise from the HLC accreditors during their recent visit. Deb is well-prepared to accept this assignment and she has my full confidence.”
Huntley joined the SVSU chemistry faculty in 1998; since 2009, she has served as dean of SVSU’s College of Science, Engineering and Technology. Prior to that, she served three years as associate vice president for academic affairs. She will begin her new role Monday, April 21.
“From the day I arrived on campus, I have been impressed by the university’s obvious commitment to our mission of delivering quality education and serving as a resource to a diverse population,” Huntley said. “I am honored and humbled to have the opportunity to work with outstanding colleagues at SVSU, to enhance our already strong academic programs and our role within the greater community.”
Huntley played a leading role in securing recent grants from The Dow Chemical Co. and Dow Corning. A common major component of both programs is improving education of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) in the Great Lakes Bay Region at the middle school, high school and college levels.
Beyond SVSU, Huntley has broad experience in higher education and evaluates other universities as a peer reviewer for institutional accreditation through the Higher Learning Commission.
An active scholar, Huntley’s research includes collaboration with Nobel-prize winning chemist Roald Hoffmann, a professor at Cornell University, on modeling the bonding in constrained organic molecules. She has authored or co-authored some 35 articles published in scholarly journals, including some of the most prominent publications in the field of chemistry. Huntley received SVSU’s prestigious Earl L. Warrick Award for Excellence in Research in 2006.
“I’m eager and excited to assume my new role as provost,” she said, “and grateful for the opportunity to serve an institution that I care so deeply about and that means so much to so many.”
A resident of Saginaw Township, Huntley worked as a research chemist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee for 14 years before coming to SVSU. She completed her Ph.D. and a master’s degree at Cornell University. She holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut.
